Gateway Foundation is seeking experienced artists and artist teams to transform a dying locust tree located in Citygarden into a sculpture which is inspired by its place in the park. The approach can be additive and/or subtractive. Work on the tree sculptures must be done between the beginning of May and the end of August. A Stipend of $3,500 will be paid upon completion of the locust tree sculpture. Indignation is moral pressure: the moment something within us refuses silence and asks to be witnessed publicly. It is the clarity that arises when dignity is threatened and a better future demands articulation. This exhibition is a coming together of artists and community members to reassert a collective vision of what the future can be. It is not merely a response to injustice; it is a declaration of responsibility. We gather not only to protest what is broken, but to imagine and celebrate what we are building. At its heart, this exhibition is an affirmation: our shared future deserves intention. Artists are invited to respond to injustice, tension, or social rupture without relying on gratuitous violence or shock. The focus should be on vision, dignity, resilience, and possibility. SPECIAL OPTIONAL THEME In partnership with the City of Rochester, RoCo invites the community to enter 6x6 artworks that feature the City of Rochester’s logo. Flower City artworks will be installed on one wall as part of a community-wide celebration of this unique graphic. This is an optional theme for participation in 6x6, The International Small Art Phenomenon, as always all 6x6 artworks will be accepted and displayed. 6x6 IS A FUNDRAISER! Every $20 artwork purchase supports our future exhibitions & public art. This exhibition presents authentic Chicano lowrider cars as living works of art, displayed outdoors in a setting that reflects their public, community-centered nature. The opening reception/carshow will be held on April 18th, Bajito y suavecito, or “low and slow,” describes a lowrider—both a customized vehicle and a way of life. These cars reflect their owner’s style and identity. They also evoke a history of community empowerment and are symbolic of Chicana/o identity. It’s about pride in the ride. Lowrider culture developed within Mexican American communities as a form of cultural expression, self-determination, and creative excellence. Shaped by history, place, and lived experience, lowriders transform the automobile into a site of artistry, identity, and personal narrative. These cars are not static objects; they are functional, mobile, and relational—activated through gathering, cruising, and shared presence. Each vehicle on view represents years of skill, labor, and intention. Layered paint finishes, hand-pulled pinstriping, airbrushed imagery, and meticulously crafted interiors reflect deep knowledge of technique as well as personal and cultural meaning. Spiritual references, family histories, neighborhood stories, and symbolic imagery are embedded throughout the work, making each car both visually striking and deeply individual. The phrase low and slow describes both an aesthetic approach and a way of moving through the world. Cruising at an unhurried pace asserts visibility, care, and agency—inviting attention on one’s own terms. In this way, lowrider cars operate at the intersection of art, design, performance, and social practice, where meaning emerges through use and interaction rather than isolation. Presenting these works outdoors acknowledges the environments in which lowrider culture is most often experienced—public, social, and communal spaces—while inviting viewers to engage thoughtfully and respectfully. The exhibition does not seek to relocate or redefine lowrider culture, but rather to create space for its presence, complexity, and artistry to be recognized and encountered. “Low & Slow” honors lowrider builders and owners as artists and cultural stewards whose work carries forward traditions of creativity, resilience, and care. By slowing down and looking closely, viewers are invited to consider how art lives beyond institutional walls—within communities, relationships, and everyday acts of making.

We invite artists to submit work for Chicano, a group exhibition exploring the evolving identity, impact, and influence of Chicano and Hispanic art and culture in the United States. As articulated by Cheech Marin, the term Chicano is not fixed—it is living, generational, and continuously redefined: Like its art, ‘Chicano’ is an evolutionary term. Each generation has as much right to define what a Chicano is as any generation that came before them. One of the main aesthetic characteristics of Chicano is traditional Mexican meets contemporary America. It’s where they meet, influence each other, and create something totally new. Using “Chicano” as the guiding theme, this exhibition will highlight works that reflect cultural identity, heritage, hybridity, resilience, community, and innovation—where tradition and contemporary experience intersect to form something new and vital. Alongside its celebration of Chicano culture, the exhibition uplifts artists from the DFW area and neighboring regions, while remaining open to broader regional voices whose work aligns with the theme.
